The eighth face-to-face meeting of the Global Forum on Maintenance and Asset Management was held in Melbourne, Australia from 2nd – 6th June 2013 in conjunction with the Asset Management Council’s (AMC) Annual Conference. Global Forum members were active in presenting at the conference, contributing several presentations and sessions.

One of the objectives of the GFMAM is to facilitate the exchange and alignment of maintenance and asset management knowledge and practices. Towards this aim the Certification Project has been initiated to research the certification schemes managed by member professional associations around the world, compare and describe them.

At this point the GFMAM member societies clearly share an interest in ensuring systems and programs are in place in our regions to assist our member base to define, develop, assess and recognize competence in Maintenance and Asset Management practices. Strictly speaking, certification is about the final item on that list: recognition of competence. That said, in our broad comparisons of the certification schemes we have found it important to discuss what approach has been taken on the definition, development and assessment of competence by each society as well.

Other dimensions that have been compared are: 1) the range of subject matter covered by each certification (in broad terms) 2) the level of responsibility / career maturity that a certification implies and 3) details about the certification such as whether it has been designed to meet ISO 17024 standards, whether it expires or requires evidence of continuous professional development.
